Praxair Inc. has 28,000 employees and operations in more than 30 countries. Sales in 2007 were $9.4 billion for the supplier of atmospheric, process and specialty gases, high-performance coatings, and related services and technologies to a wide diversity of customers. Praxair Surface Technologies is a subsidiary that applies metallic and ceramic coatings and powders to metal surfaces in order to resist wear, high temperatures and corrosion.
Praxair adopted its name in 1992, from the Greek word "praxis," or practical application, and "air", the company’s primary raw material. The company was originally founded in 1907 when it first commercialized cryogenically separated oxygen in North America. The company says it introduced the first distribution system for liquid gas in 1917 and developed on-site gas supply by the end of WWII. In the 1960s, Praxair introduced non-cryogenic means of air separation, and since then has continued to develop applications technologies for various industries. The company holds almost 3,000 patents.
Stephen F. Angel
Chairman, President and CEO
Angel became chairman of Praxair on May 1, 2007. He has been president and CEO since Jan. 1, 2007. He joined Praxair in 2001 as executive vice president, responsible for Praxair businesses in North America, Asia and Europe. He also oversaw the Healthcare business. He was named president and CEO in 2006. Angel also serves as director of the board of the U.S.-China Business Council.
Matthew J. White
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
White was appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer of Praxair, Inc. in 2014. White joined Praxair in 2004 as finance director of Praxair’s largest business unit, North American Industrial Gases. In 2008, he became vice president and controller of Praxair, Inc., then was named vice president and treasurer in 2010. In 2011, Matt was named president of Praxair Canada. Before joining Praxair, White was vice president, finance, at Fisher Scientific and before that he held various financial positions, including group controller, at GenTek, a manufacturing and performance chemicals company.
Marc A. Franciosa
Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Franciosa was named vice president and chief information officer of Praxair, Inc. in 2010. He is responsible for global information technology services. Franciosa joined Praxair in 2008 as director of global enterprise resource planning deployments in the Information Technology Services department. He was named director of business solutions in 2009. Before joining Praxair, Franciosa spent 14 years with the Linde Group of Germany and the former BOC. During that time, he held increasingly responsible management positions in the U.S., South Africa, Australia and the United Kingdom.
