Helical spline mechanism transforms linear piston motion into quarter-turn actuation.

Biffi Italia’s new series of compact, quarter-turn pneumatic actuators. The actuator handles areas where space is restricted. The new TP range specifically targets ball, butterfly, plug or damper-style valves in heavy duty on-off and modulating service where dimension and weight constraints limit customer options.

The helical spline mechanism transforms linear piston motion into quarter-turn actuation. This maximizes efficiency and optimizes overall equipment dimensions compared to conventional scotch yoke actuators, according to Biffi Italia.

The range has been designed and engineered to generate high output torques up to 60,000Nm for operation in temperature ranges from -60°C to 100°C. With an integrated spring within the cylinder, the compact design features the same dimensions for double-acting or spring return -- spring to open or spring to close operations. Each actuator can be engineered to meet individual customer needs, with the customizable helical profile able to suit valve-specific torque characteristics.

Biffi has developed its new TP compact actuator series using 3-D modeling and virtual prototyping methodologies. Actuator range meets stringent standards and approvals, including environmental protection approval for the actuator housing in line with IP66/IP67M and NEMA type 4/4X/6 degrees of protection and compliance with the PED/ATEX/API 6A PR2 standards. Extensive testing ensures the range is also suitable for SIL 3 applications.
