Whirpool is reducing the levels of a toxic chemical at the site of its former plant in Fort Smith, Arkansas to the satisfaction of local administrators, according to an article from the Times Record. The site has reportedly been contaminated with toxic trichloroethylene (TCE) since the late 1980s. In 2001, TCE was discovered under a nearby neighborhood.
According to the Times Record, Whirlpool’s 2016 annual report suggests that contamination cleanup efforts in and around the closed plant reduced toxic concentration levels between 53% to 83% in targeted areas. Whirlpool closed the plant in 2012. Representatives from the company reportedly said there are no remaining lawsuits from homeowners related to the TCE.
