The recent United Nations conference on the health of the oceans produced a commitment to clean up the planet’s polluted seas. The Trash Free Seas Alliance TFA), a part of the environmental group Ocean Conservancy, alongside partners from the plastic industry, pledged to raise $10 million by 2020 to address the marine plastic debris plaguing the world’s waters, according to an article from Plastics News.
The American Chemistry Council, The Dow Chemical Company, Amcor, the World Plastics Council, Coca Cola, Proctor & Gamble and the World Wildlife Fund are reportedly among the organizations on board to accomplish TFSA’s signature goal: a 50% reduction in plastics entering the ocean by 2025. According to the article, 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean each year.
