One of the most polluted pieces of land in the country is in line for a massive cleanup. The EPA approved $9.7 million to begin cleaning up the Velsicol Chemical Superfund site in St. Louis, Michigan this fall, according to an article from Michigan Radio.
Closed in 1978, the entire Velsicol plant was knocked over and buried with a concrete cap in 1982, chemicals and all, according to the article. The chemicals began leaching into the Pine River, ultimately contaminating the city’s water supply. The total estimated cost of the cleanup is reportedly anticipated to be in excess of $300 million. Typically, according to the article, once the EPA begins funding a cleanup, it provides annual installments that allow it to continue.
