Hard-working emojis featuring women scientists, engineers and IT professionals could soon be gracing our smartphone screens if Google has anything to say about it. The company is urging the Unicode Consortium to consider a set of 13 new emojis depicting women in the workplace to serve as better role models for girls and reduce gender inequality, according to an article from International Business Times.
Google’s goal, according to the article, is to empower young women, the heaviest emoji users, by highlighting the diversity of careers available to them and the pivotal roles women play in the world. The new emojis reportedly reflect the main global workforce sectors and the public’s emphasis on STEM careers. The proposal isn’t limited to the sciences, however. Emojis up for consideration also include chef, farmer, mechanic, teacher and rock star.
