ABB Warns Of Challenging Conditions Ahead
The ability of technology to improve decision-making and drive profitability in global chemical manufacturing will be critical in meeting these challenges.
Conditions over the next decade are likely to become more challenging with considerable uncertainty and disparity of performance throughout the chemical industry, warns ABB in the first of a newly-released, two-part white paper “Transforming Chemical Operations Through Technology.” The white paper argues that conditions now show the chemical industry is at an important stage of transformation and explores the external and internal challenges which can be addressed through digitalization. The paper suggests that in an uncertain macroeconomic environment and an industry with significant production and geography-related complexity, chemical manufacturers would be wise to invest in digital technologies and advanced analytics to help them…

Humans are good at ad hoc intervention and non-linear reasoning. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady-state functions and transition management.
Procedures are everywhere; and nowhere is this more obvious than in the process industries. Many like to refer to the process industries as being largely “continuous,” but this – in fact – is a misrepresentation. The state of process facilities constantly changes. Whether starting up, shutting down, changing grades or in the middle of a turnaround, a plant operates by procedures and transitional states. These can either run smoothly to pro-vide superior plant performance and a safe and orderly start-up/shutdown/transition, or result in costly unplanned shutdowns, incidents, lost product and lost opportunities.Procedures are a predetermined group of tasks that must be completed in a set order and in a consistent manner to achieve a…

Honeywell Integrates Cyber Security For Connected Operations
Software protects connected operations from cyber threats.
Honeywell launches a software offering to provide cybersecurity to industrial customers who manage diverse process control networks, sites and vendors. As customers continue their digital transformation and their industrial sites become more connected, integrating cybersecurity has become even more critical, according to Honeywell. The multi-site offering for cybersecurity management is based on Honeywell’s ICS Shield, which provides a top-down operational technology (OT) security management option for securing connected industrial control system (ICS) environments with multiple physical sites and multiple automation equipment types. It also enables secure management of remote field assets through a single security operations center.

Cyber concerns may be all over the news, but ensuring your facilities’ physical security remains an enduring imperative. Industrial and critical infrastructure facilities face an ever-expanding list of threats coming from all directions – land, sea, and air.Adversarial or innocent trespassers as well as vandalism, sabotage, theft, and malicious attacks are common concerns. Today, there may be weaponized or intelligence-gathering drones flying overhead or submarines underwater. Lone-wolf or organized terrorist attacks are possible. Even an authorized building occupant could “go ballistic.” Are you prepared to handle the possible threats?Because any security lapse may be presumed to result from negligence, choosing the right set of…

Deter Difficulties with Instrument Air Dryers
Understand some common causes of problems with desiccant devices
Instrument air dryers are a necessary part of the compressed air system in a typical chemical plant. These devices and their associated filters remove water and lubricant from the compressed air that goes to sensitive instrumentation and control actuators. Such dryers act to pull down the dew point of the compressed air, even when ambient temperatures are low, so the air remains dry and contamination free. However, the units can experience problems. So, here, I’ll discuss some interesting issues I’ve encountered and ways to prevent them from occurring in your plant.Compressed air occupies about one-eighth the original volume and can’t hold as much water vapor. The free water condenses out, leaving 100% saturated compressed air. This…

AkzoNobel, Partners Study Renewable Energy Opportunities In Sweden
AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals joins partnership to explore opportunities for green hydrogen and “electrofuels” in Sweden.
AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals is partnering with three groups in Sweden to explore the opportunities for producing green hydrogen and “electrofuels” using renewable electricity. The partners are RISE Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), forestry group Södra and packaging materials company BillerudKorsnäs. The study is also supported by the Swedish Energy Agency.
Converting excess renewable electricity into green hydrogen or electrofuels (synthetic fuels based on electricity, water and CO2) offers the potential to balance the fluctuations in supply and demand of electricity from renewable sources including wind and solar power. AkzoNobel is a major user of electricity in Sweden, and will contribute its expertise in electrochemistry…
