Flow Meters Measure Velocity of Liquids

Universal Flow Monitors has added a Profinet option to its CoolPoint Vortex Shedding flow meters. The CoolPoint meter with Profinet is expected to be available for sale in the first quarter of 2013.            

The Universal Flow Monitors' CoolPoint with Profinet can start up within 500 milliseconds and includes dual RJ45 connectors with a built-in hub. Enclosed in a molded plastic housing, it measures and transmits flow over Profinet Industrial Ethernet networking for manufacturing and process plants. 

The flow meters measure the velocity of liquids such as water, chemicals and corrosives. They use a bluff body obstruction to produce vortices, and an electronic transducer measures these oscillations to provide a signal proportional to flow rate. Increasing flow increases the frequency of oscillation. CoolPoint vortex shedding flowmeters have no moving parts to stick or coat, eliminating potential for clogging.

The molded plastic CoolPoint flow meter with Profinet communication also includes a repeatability of  ± 0.25 percent (1/4 of 1 percent) of full-scale and accuracy of  ±2 percent of full-scale, a 10:1 turndown ratio. It’s available in pipe sizes of 1/4 inch to 2 inches; it transmits flow rate, low-flow alarm set point, and alarm status (on/off); it receives alarm set point from the server; and includes a data update rate of 100 msec
