Company attributes the milestone to wide implementation of its Emerson Smart Wireless technology in process industries.

Emerson Process Management has clocked more than 1 billion total hours of wireless operations across 10,000 systems, the Emerson business unit said Oct. 9.

The company attributes the milestone to wide implementation of its Emerson Smart Wireless technology in the oil and gas, chemical and other process industries. The technology, based on the internationally recognized IEC 62591 WirelessHART standard, provides real-time plant data designed to optimize operations, improve worker and plant safety and reduce emissions and other environmental impacts.

The technology was first adopted for use in harsh, remote environments where wired instrumentation was not feasible.

Since its release five years ago, Emerson estimates put the total installed savings resulting from Smart Wireless field devices at more than $350 million and reductions in commissioning and installation time totaling 16 man-years. The adoption of this technology has now spread to more than 120 countries and more than 10,000 separate wireless systems, according to Emerson.
