Walmart is asking its suppliers to stop using eight controversial chemicals in their products, according to an article in Fortune. The retailer is reportedly trying to eliminate the chemicals in some 90,000 consumer products including toys, cosmetics, kitchen supplies and furniture, due to health and environmental concerns.
According to Fortune, the offenders include butylparaben, a preservative in beauty products; triclosan, a chemical used in clothing, kitchenware, furniture and toys; and formaldehyde, a carcinogen used in a number of items including paint and other building materials. Walmart is reportedly requiring manufacturers to label the chemicals in question on packaging by 2018 and work to find alternatives. Walmart’s main competitor Target is requesting the same of its suppliers, according to the article.
