Governor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana and Shell Chemical PL officials broke ground on a $717 million, three-year project in Geismar, LA that will reportedly create the world’s largest single-site production of alpha olefins. The new manufacturing plant is expected to begin operating in early 2018. Baton Rouge-based Turner Industries will serve as general construction contractor. The project is expected to generate 1,500 construction jobs.
Capacity of the linear alpha olefins unit will reportedly be 425 kilotons per year, and the new plant will be the fourth alpha olefins production plant on the 800-acre site, where Shell Chemical has operated since 1967.
