The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) recently denounced the use of chlorine as a weapon, according to an article from Homeland Preparedness News. Forty science societies from Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America reportedly joined the IUPAC in their condemnation of the practice.
According to the article, the American Chemical Society and the American Chemistry Council expressed their concerns in a joint letter written to the head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) over the reported use of chemicals, including chlorine, as chemical weapons in Syria and other locations. The organizations reportedly go on to say that they support the OPCW in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, which forbids member states from use, stockpiling, distribution, development or storage of any chemical weapons.
