Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg donates $50 million to the museum.

As a kid, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would reportedly take the bus and then a trolley from his home in Medford, Massachusetts to the Boston Museum of Science every weekend. Decades later, the 74-year-old billionaire honors the institution of his youth with a $50 million donation, the largest gift in the museum’s 186-year history, according to an article from WBUR.

According to the article, $40 million of the gift will bolster the museum’s endowment and the rest will be used to expand educational programs in science and engineering. The donation’s impact could be far-reaching as engineering curriculum developed at the museum, which reports 1.5 million annual visitors, is reportedly shared with students, teachers and other museums around the country. Bloomberg, who earned an engineering degree and a Harvard MBA, according to the article, is a long-time supporter of the museum.
