DuPont was recognized on Feb. 26, 2009, for the invention and manufacture of DuPont Cerenol renewably sourced polyols (polyetherdiols) by the Plastics Environmental Division of the Society for Plastics Engineers (SPE) with its 2009 Environmental Stewardship Award. Hari Sunkara, research associate, DuPont Central Research and Development, was on hand to accept the award on behalf of DuPont. Sunkara is the inventor or co-inventor of more than 100 patents for Cerenol or applications using Cerenol.
“We are pleased that SPE continues to recognize the portfolio of polymers DuPont has developed through integration of cutting-edge biotechnology, chemistry and engineering,” said Ray W. Miller, Cerenol global business manager, DuPont Applied BioSciences. “Cerenol is a unique family of polyols which has been proven to be an excellent replacement for petroleum products in a wide variety of elastomeric materials, and we look forward to its broad adoption as the industry moves toward more sustainable plastics.’
DuPont Cerenol is a family of 100% renewably sourced, high-performance polyols. Versions of Cerenol can replace petroleum-based ingredients or even finished products without compromising functionality. It offers value-added properties and can increase process efficiencies for a broad range of products in diverse markets including personal care, functional fluids and high-performance elastomers. Unlike petroleum-based or other plant-based alternatives, DuPont Cerenol is said to be easily tailored to meet specific needs and performs better in many end uses while providing significant environmental benefits.
Compared to existing alternatives such as polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG), DuPont Cerenol, from cradle to gate, offers a 40% savings in non-renewable energy and a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Cerenol has a diverse portfolio of uses and benefits.
