Engineering best practices by the Process Industry Practices consortium
04/03/2005
Process Industry Practices, PIP, was formed in 1993 as a 15 member consortium that has now grown to 34 member companies, 17 subscribers, and 11 licensees. PIP is a separately funded initiative that operates under the umbrella of the Construction Industry Institute (CII) at The University of Texas at Austin. The "volunteer" PIP organization has published over 475 recommended Practices in eight engineering disciplines for use in the process industry EPC process. PIP Practices are meant to replace "internal" company standards used by the industry for projects and maintenance work.
The eight engineering disciplines covered by PIP Practices include Civil, Structural, Architectural – Coatings, Insulation, & Refractory – Electrical – Machinery – P&ID - Piping – Process Control – and Vessel.
Access to additional information about PIP can be found at the following link to the PIP website: http://www.pip.org/ . Full lists of current Members, Subscribers, and Licensees can be accessed from this home page. Lists of published Practices and Abstracts are also available from this page.
The PIP Annual Conference is scheduled for Wednesday April 27, 2005. It is being held at the Houston IAH Airport Hyatt Regency Hotel. The conference activities begin with a reception for attendees on Tuesday evening April 26. It is concluded with a dinner on Wednesday April 27. This one day conference includes two industry guest speakers, a panel discussion, workshop activities, and awards and recognition of PIP participants.
The theme for this year’s PIP Conference is “Changing Times – The Common Denominator”. Guest speakers include Jim Porter, Vice-President DuPont and James Slaughter, President S&B Engineers and Constructors. Mr. Porter’s presentation is titled “Resourcing the Future: Practice Makes Profit” and Mr. Slaughter’s presentation is titled “Opportunity for Change – The Need to Compete”.
The subject of the morning panel discussion is “PIP Supports Dealing with Changing Times”. Afternoon workshop sessions will cover “Case Histories – Projects Examples”, “Data Base Application for PIP Piping and Valve Practices”, “How to ‘Work’ PIP into Maintenance & Operations”, and “Specification Standardization Across Multiple Sites”.
If you are interested in attending this “by invitation only” conference, please contact the PIP office and request conference registration material by email at info@pip.org or by phone: 512-232-3041.
