Re: Is my mixer size too large?19 February 2010 at 1:29pm
Your suggested mixer size is way too large for your tote. To mix 340 gallons of a 100 cp fluid with a 1 sp gr requires only about a 1/2 hp mixer at 350 rpm. A 350 rpm mixer with a 1/2 hp motor would normally be supplied with a 5-inch hydrofoil impeller. However, if a 45-deg pitched turbine were used (but not recommended), it would only be about 3.5 inches in diameter.
A 14-inch diameter pitched turbine would overload a 2-hp motor at 350 rpm. A 2-hp mixer with any impeller would be more mixing than you need in 340 gallons.

Would a four-blade, 45-deg pitched, 14-inch diameter impeller be too large or about right to mix a square IBC - 340 gallons of sp gr = 1 and viscosity of up to 100 centipose liquid, turning at up to 350 rpm, 2 HP motor.
