Since centrifuges are the most likely unit to be unsafe with many coming apart, I would suggest the book "User Guide for the Safe Operation of Centrifuges," by Institute of Chemical Engineers, UK. (A search of Amazon.com found a few new and used copies of this 44-page book.)

Filters are relatively safe, so the only thing required is overpressure protection via rupture discs or relief valves; and of course, guards to protect from moving parts.
