Do you know of prepackaged heat-transfer system manufacturers that offer closed-loop equipment with molten salt such as HITEC for high-temperature heat transfer? Our process heating needs require heat transfer to a process liquid undergoing endothermic reaction at temperatures of 350 to 450 degrees C (662 to 842 degrees F).
In order to avoid coking, there should not be localized hot spots. Hence we would like to avoid indirect heating by high-temperature exhaust gases. At the said process temperatures, high temp HTFs such as Dowtherm A are at or beyond their limits. So we are looking at use of molten salt for heat transfer.
We should be able to use the high-temperature heat source of exhaust gases from combustion of gaseous hydrocarbons to heat up the molten salt.
If no such prepackaged systems are available, can a heat exchanger system be designed for HITEC using standard heat-exchanger design considerations -- of course keeping in mind high temperatures and material of construction compatibilities?
Have an insight or suggestion?

Re: Are there prepackaged heat-transfer systems for high temperatures?
25 February 2009 at 1:29pmI am not familiar with any specific vendors that supply packaged systems. However, the manufacturers of the salt you are interested in may be able to assist you. This type of system is generally the same as any closed loop circulating heating/cooling system with some additional precautions that need to be taken regarding freeze protection and startup. Most times direct fired systems are used to provide the heat to the salt loop.
