Improve thermocouple response time

Q: How do you improve thermocouple response time? In one of my plants, I am checking thermocouple response time (K-type) in main steam temperature measurement. The response time is coming 22 sec without a thermowell. How do I achieve a response time of 7 to 10 sec.?

A: I normally use a protective thermowell for safety reasons in any industrial chemical plant. This will slow down the response unless the thermowell is filled with a fluid with a high thermal conductivity that will remain a liquid at your operating temperatures. Locating the thermowell in an elbow pointing into the flow might help improve the response. The installation design and emersion length must not cause vibration and fatigue failure.
