General compressor information

Q: Is it essential to measure the viscosity of the refrigerant/oil mixture or lube during operation? Is there a minimum viscosity that is required to prevent damage to the bearing and other components? Where can I learn about the different types of compressors?

A: Any given compressor bearing has a minimum viscosity requirement. This will be a function of the type of compressor and somewhat to the application. One source for learning more about different kinds of compressors is Compressors Selection and Sizing by Royce N. Brown.
