OTS Process

Q: I want to know how the Project Process Engineer can help to acquire OTS, considering that the project is already approved and the supplier is almost selected. Does he need to do a simulation of the plant? Does he need to know what the common failures in the process plant are? Does he need to compile all process data; data sheet, P&IDs, PFD, etc? If you can give an idea from where I can start to develop this project, it would be appreciated.

A: To achieve a successful outcome with an OTS, it is essential that the dynamic simulator replicates true plant behavior and performance in regards to heat and mass balances under transient conditions (lags and dead time).

The control loops should be identical to those on the existing plant in terms of calibration and valve sizing for controller tuning exercises to be meaningful.

The graphical user interface (GUI) should be identical to that used on the plant control system to ensure operator obtains maximum benefit and is not confused.

A detailed user requirement specification (URS) where the OTS objectives, plant start up, shutdown, feed change, services excursions and failure conditions to be investigated are provided.

The interaction between the instructor and the trainees should be clearly stated and the training session objectives clearly understood. Preparation of this URS should involve all interested parties including plant management and operating personnel.
