Company Information

Shell Chemical was founded in 1929 and began the world's first production of ammonia from natural gas in California in 1931. It also started production of chemical solvents from refinery gases in California during the early 1930s. In 1942 it developed the production of butadiene, a key raw material for synthetic rubbers. In 1941, production of Teepol liquid detergent began at Stanlow in the UK, the first manufacture of a petroleum-based organic chemical, in Europe. Today, Shell Chemicals manufactures and delivers petrochemical building blocks to large industrial customers in all parts of the world.

van Beurden joined Shell in 1983 as a gas processing engineer after graduating as a chemical engineer from Delft University in The Netherlands. In 1987 he became assistant plant manager of C3 Solvents at Shell Nederland Chemie (Pernis) before moving in 1989 to the Port Sudan Refinery. In 1996 he became the general manager of operations of Malaysia LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). His next role, as Vice President of Mexico Gas and Power, involved helping to build a new LNG business for Shell in Mexico.Ben fulfilled an assignment as private assistant to the chairman of Shell from 2002 to 2004, before his appointment as vice president of Manufacturing Excellence and Support at the start of 2005. He became executive vice president of chemicals on Dec. 1, 2006.

Alexander has been vice president of finance since April 2006. He joined Shell in 1989 after graduating from St Andrews University in Scotland. During his career at Shell, Doug has undertaken a broad range of finance roles and has had various business experiences across downstream and exploration and production.

Rothwell took over as vice president of innovation and chemicals technology within Shell Global Solutions International on March 1, 2007. Rothwell is based in Houston and has global responsibility for identifying and leveraging innovation and chemicals technology across the Shell Group, including Shell Chemicals.
