Company Information

Dow, Midland, Mich., is a diversified chemical company that delivers a broad range of products and services to customers in around 160 countries, connecting chemistry and innovation with the principles of sustainability to help provide everything from fresh water, food and pharmaceuticals to paints, packaging and personal care products.

The Dow Chemical Co.’s history started May 18, 1897, when the company was incorporated based on Herbert H. Dow's plan to manufacture and sell bleach on a commercial scale. One year later, the first commercial scale production of bleach begin.

In 1913 Mr. Dow announces the company will exit the bleach business and the company focus shifts to the value of chlorine as a raw material.

Diversification in products, as well as employees, is evident in 1929, when Dow hires its first woman researcher, Sylvia Stoesser.

Fast forward to today, and the company enjoys annual sales of $54 billion and employs 46,000 people worldwide.

Liveris' 32-year Dow career has spanned manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and business and general management. He has spent the bulk of his career in Asia, where he was general manager for the company's operations in Thailand, and later head of all Asia-Pacific operations. He began his Dow career in 1976 in Australia. He has been a member of Dow's Board of Directors since February 2004 and was elected as Chairman of the Board effective April 1, 2006.

Merszei is also a member of Dow's Board of Directors, its executive committee, and environment health & safety committee. He has executive oversight for Dow's activities in Europe. He is a member of Dow's executive leadership committee, which is responsible for corporate strategy and financial performance. He is also chairman of the company's business operations committee and serves on the geography and people operational committees. Merszei, who first joined Dow in 1977, returned to the company in July 2005 after serving four years as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Alcan, Inc.

William F. BanholzerWilliam F. Banholzer

Banholzer is a member of the Dow’s executive leadership committee, management committee, chairs the company’s innovation committee, and leads Dow’s research and development activities across the globe. Banholzer serves on Dow’s Venture Capital Board, Dow AgroSciences' Members Committee, the Dow Foundation, and the governing Council of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Dow Corning Corp. and serves on the board’s corporate responsibility committee. Prior to Dow, Banholzer had a 22-year career with General Electric Co., where he was vice president of global technology at GE Advanced Materials, responsible for worldwide technology and engineering.
