With customers in more than 120 countries, Ciba touts that it improves existing materials or adds new qualities via its expertise in organic synthesis, solid state chemistry and physics, polymer chemistry, catalysis, biocatalysis, and photochemistry/photophysics.
The roots of Ciba date back to 1758 when J.R. Geigy Ltd., the oldest chemicals company in Basel, Switzerland, began trading in chemicals and dyes. In 1970, Geigy merged with Ciba ─ a Basel based chemicals company founded in 1884 ─ to form Ciba Geigy Ltd.
Ciba Geigy Ltd. was a leading worldwide biological and chemicals group dedicated to satisfying needs in three diverse areas: health care, agriculture and industry. In March 1996, Ciba Geigy and the pharmaceuticals company Sandoz merged and formed one of the world’s largest life sciences groups ─ Novartis. As a result of this merger, the specialty chemicals divisions were spun off as Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc. on Jan. 1, 1997. The company adopted the name Ciba Inc. in 2007.

Cummins joined Ciba in 1971 and has been CEO since Jan. 1, 2008. He was previously chief operating officer from 2005 to 2007, head of Plastic Additives segment from 2004 to 2005 and head of International Coordination & Human Resources from 2001 to 2004. Cummins held a number of leading international positions including Regional President in China and Head of Home & Personal Care.
Martin Riediker
chief innovation officer
Riediker joined Ciba in 1982 and was appointed chief innovation officer in February 2008. Previously, he was chief technology officer and president of the Europe, Middle East and Africa region as well as president of the Consumer Care division. He has broad experience in research and development and in resins, polymers, detergents and cosmetics chemistry.
