TWIC™Extended Expiration Date (EED) and New Renewal Process
The Coast Guard and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently announced a new option for renewing Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWICs), many of which will begin to expire in late 2012 and early 2013. The new, streamlined, option – known as the Extended Expiration Date (EED) TWIC – is a one-time, three (3) year extension intended to provide convenience to workers pending the deployment of TWIC readers.
The EED TWIC costs $60.00 and only requires a single trip to the TWIC Enrollment Center (compared with $129.75 and two trips to the TWIC Enrollment Center for a standard five (5) year TWIC). Importantly however, the EED TWIC is only available to U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals whose current valid TWIC is set to expire on or before December 31, 2014. Individuals who do not meet the requirements above are not eligible for an EED TWIC and must apply for the standard five (5) year TWIC.
EED TWICs may be ordered and paid for by calling the TWIC Help Desk (866-347-8942) but must be picked up and activated in person at a TWIC Enrollment Center. The EED TWIC option will become available on August 30, 2012. For additional information on EED TWICs, you can view TSA’s EED TWIC Frequently Asked Questions bulletin.
