PHMSA 2012 Emergency Response Guidebook Released
The US Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), in conjunction with Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SCT), recently published the 2012 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG).
The ERG, which is updated every four years, is used by first responders, such as firefighters, police, and other emergency personnel who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a transportation incident involving hazardous materials. It specifically aids first responders in
(1) quickly identifying the specific or generic classification of the material(s) involved in an incident; and
(2) protecting themselves and the general public during the initial response phase of the incident.
The ERG is an important tool that should be in the hands of not only first responders – but all persons involved in transporting hazardous materials. In the U.S., the ERG is available to public emergency responders through State Coordinators. Copies also are available commercially through a number of commercial vendors. An electronic copy of the 2012 ERG is available for download by clicking here.
