Series of brief podcasts will cover myriad topics.
We are always looking for ways to bring new content to you. And understanding that your time is limited, we want to present the information quickly and let you get back to your busy day. With this in mind, Chemical Processing has launched a new podcast series called the Minute Clinic. Each podcast deals with just one crucial topic at a time and runs no more than 10 minutes.
The concept grew from an idea proposed by one of CP’s authors, David Strobhar, founder of Beville Engineering in Dayton, Ohio. (His articles include: “Build Operator Expertise Faster,” and “How Many Alarms Can an Operator Handle?”) He also started the Center for Operator Performance, which a number of major operating companies and automation vendors support.

After breaking ground on the project less than a year ago, Kansas State University opens the Bulk Solids Innovation Center. The two-story, 13,000-square-foot facility studies the science and understanding of bulk solids materials handling. The innovation center houses six laboratories for university and industry-sponsored research; training and education, conference and lecture rooms; a material properties test lab; and a full-scale bulk solids test bay.
Kansas State University is the key tenant in the center, while two local companies, Coperion K-Tron Salina and Vortex Valves, supplement the facility by serving as anchor occupants. University-level courses associated with bulk solids and professional development courses for industry…

Siemens’ motor control centers are now available as a standard catalog offering, eliminating the need for a customized quote or negotiated lead times for new MCCs and units.
Siemens’ motor control centers (MCCs) are now available as a standard catalog offering. The new offer eliminates the need for a customized quote or negotiated lead times for new MCCs and units (replacement buckets).
Traditionally, MCCs needed to be configured, customized and engineered for each order resulting in a lead time of multiple weeks. Catalog MCC units and structures will ship as soon as five days after an order is entered, according to the company.
The new standard MCCs are available for industries such as water and wastewater, food and beverage, oil and gas, cement and mining, and pulp and paper. Customized MCC units and structures are still available for projects that need engineered MCCs.

Succeed with Run-to-Failure
Some steps can minimize surprises when using this maintenance approach
A shelf in my study holds a collection of debris from process mistakes. None of the errors were mine, by the way. One memento is the recovered tip of a furnace (roaster) thermowell. It was seven years old when it corroded through and caused an unnecessary shutdown that lasted nearly a week. No records were kept. Nobody scheduled it for replacement. The plant engineer was left to wonder why the roaster tripped on over-temperature and how to deal with molten, soggy iron oxide collected in the cone. Poor documentation led to poor troubleshooting and a loss of production. This is what is called a run-to-failure (RTF) mistake.
If your plant is on a shoestring budget and RTF is all you can afford, how can you make the best of it? First, develop…

Organizations that take a “felt leadership” approach to process safety management are making strides in the ongoing quest to improve process safety.
The best laid plans are just that – plans. Unless you have someone championing the plans it’s nothing more than a useless exercise. This is true with process safety and unfortunately lives have been lost because of it. To truly improve process safety management (PSM), the responsibility falls to senior executives. It’s a trickle-down effect that at the very least will improve performance and at the utmost will save lives. DuPont calls this “felt leadership” and starts with leaders improving and influencing decision-making across the board.
Once upper management is on board, you can get to the root of accidents. While it’s easy to place blame on operators, you must look at the whole picture not just the last few brush strokes.
