Larry Avery (Clarence E. Avery) passed away Oct. 10 at the age of 94. He had been a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers since 1944. Avery became active with the United Kingdom based Filtration Society from its beginnings in 1963. In 1968 he formed the New York Chapter of the American Filtration Society (AFS) and was twice president of the chapter. Avery was chairman of the American Program Committee of the Filtration Society from 1984-1985. He authored numerous technical papers on filtration, was a frequent presenter at conferences and was a passionate contributor to AFS. Avery was also a member of the American Chemical Society.

The Specialty Chemicals Market Volume Index, a tool created by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) entered the fourth quarter on a tepid note, slipping back 0.1% on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis in October after a 0.3% gain in September and a weak first half of the year. Weakness in 2015 continues to be centered in oilfield chemicals and a few other segments that combined weighed on overall volumes. Of the 28 specialty chemical segments monitored, 16 expanded in October, one was flat and 11 declined. Although there was weakness beyond oil chemicals during October, market volumes excluding oilfield chemicals were essentially flat, suggesting some stabilization of overall U.S. industrial activity.

The European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), Brussels, has bestowed Student Mobility Awards on three chemical engineers. The biennial awards recognize the best European chemical engineering students who spent at least one semester at a university outside of their home country. The awards were presented at the 10th European Congress of Chemical Engineering, which took place recently in Nice, France.

Bad Chemical Reaction Causes Fire At Lubrizol Plant
An oxidizer is to blame for the blaze near Pittsburgh.
A chemical reaction gone wrong caused a three-alarm fire at Lubrizol Corp.’s Oilfield Chemistry plant near Pittsburgh on Nov. 17.
According to plant manager Ed Michalowski, "We were working with a chemical, an oxidizer, that had an adverse reaction. We don't know the full details of it yet. We're still doing some investigation."
Two buildings caught fire from the initial chemical plant fire. Two chemicals were being released from the fire, ammonium persulfate and sodium chlorite.
One Lubrizol employee suffered chemical burns. Michalowski said he was near the initial reaction and was able to pull the fire alarm. Two other employees were taken to the hospital because of chest pains, likely caused by stress. All three were released from…

The ability to use one form of primary fuel (typically, natural gas) to simultaneously provide two forms of energy (thermal and power) is known as combined heat and power (CHP) or cogeneration. One of the most common forms of CHP is use of a natural-gas-fired gas turbine generator (GTG) operating in conjunction with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The GTG provides electrical power and the HRSG provides steam at the required pressure.
