The ACC’s Specialty Chemicals Market Volume Index began the third quarter on a stable note.
The Specialty Chemicals Market Volume Index, a new tool created by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), began the 3rd quarter on a stable note. This follows steady monthly declines since December as weakness in oilfield chemicals and a few other segments weighed on overall volumes. Of the 28 specialty chemical segments included in the index, 16 expanded in July, nine declined and three were flat.
The overall specialty chemicals volume index was off 0.1% year-over-year (Y/Y) on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis. Year-earlier comparisons were generally in the 4% to 6.8% range during 2012-2014, but ongoing weakness in the oil and gas sectors continue to affect headline volumes. Still, on a Y/Y basis, gains are fairly widespread among…

The Aug. 13 explosion in Tianjin, China, that killed at least 114 people and injured hundreds more has officials looking into hazardous chemical practices at Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co.
According to CNN, China’s news agency Xinhua said the company was licensed to handle dangerous chemicals at the time of the blasts but only obtained that license in June. A previous license had lapsed in October 2014.
The warehouse was a temporary storage facility that housed materials after they arrived at the port and before they were transported elsewhere, city officials have said.
Several hundred tons of sodium cyanide have been found at two locations and are being cleaned up, they added.

All process plants need electrical power and thermal energy and almost always there is a concurrent demand for both of these energy streams. The ability to use one form of primary fuel (typically, natural gas) to simultaneously provide two forms of energy (thermal and power) is known as combined heat and power (CHP) or cogeneration. One of the most common forms of CHP is use of a natural-gas-fired gas turbine generator (GTG) operating in conjunction with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The GTG provides electrical power and the HRSG provides steam at the required pressure.
