Following are a few highlights of the conference:
- Ensuring Reliable Bulk Solids Flow will be presented by Eric Maynard, senior consultant, Jenike & Johanson. Handling or processing powders and bulk solids is fraught with problems, whether you are dealing with chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, foods, metals, or a myriad of other materials. This tutorial will provide solid insights into common flow problems that arise when powders and bulk solids are put into silos, bins, and hoppers. Ways to characterize a material's flow properties will be presented along with proven, practical, and cost effective design solutions. Retrofits to existing equipment as well as design of new facilities will be discussed.
- Maximize Blending Performance While Minimizing Powder Segregation also will be lead by Maynard. Maintaining a uniform blend of dry bulk solids is a problem faced daily by engineers and operators in industries as varied as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foods, plastics, and battery production. Even if a "good" blend is achieved, often the major problem is how to maintain that blend through downstream powder handling in equipment. The inability of maintain a blend (i.e. segregation) at the point where it is needed, is always costly in terms of rejected material, extra blending time, and defective end products.
- Segregation & Blending Selection or Design will be presented by Kerry Johnson, COO, Material Flow Solutions, Inc. Blending of powder material is an important unit operation used in many industries.
This workshop will introduce the basics of blend theory as it applies to powders and will look at blender selection based on key flow properties. Segregation in blenders will also be a focus of this discussion. Segregation occurs due to a variety of mechanisms. The fines may sift through a coarse matrix resulting in size separation of particles. The fines may also be carried by air currents and deposit in process vessels where entrainment velocities decrease below some minimum value. These and other mechanisms cause different segregation patterns in process equipment.
- Nano Powders features instructors Giuseppe Bonifazi, Full Professor, Dept. Nanotechnology, and more specifically nanoparticles technology, represents one of the most challenging research area of these last years mainly for the wide range of “innovative” applications that can be related to the production and use of particulates, aggregates and structures characterized by dimensions below 1m. Nanometer-sized particles currently attract, in fact, considerable attention because they often present properties which differ from those of the corresponding bulk materials (i.e. nano-particulate fillers of various type and shape utilized in polymers to produce composite materials improve properties while reducing costs) and when utilized to realize nano-structures (i.e. nano-rods, nano-tubes) leads to a variety of properties, in the final manufactured goods, so that to be used in many new and innovative devices (i.e structures, materials, sensing probes, intelligent detectors, etc.).
